Parts of an Essay Introduction (4 to 5 SENTENCE) –Thesis sentence Body Paragraphs (2-3 paragraphs) –Topic sentence –Context & Quote –Commentary –Context & Quote –Commentary –Conclusion Sentence (with transition) Conclusion (4 to five SENTENCE) –Restate Thesis Sentence

Integrating Quotes Integrating a quotes as someone ‘said’ it. Creon demands, “Antigone must die” (ii.45-47). If you use the word ‘that,’ there is no need for a comma! Creon demands THAT “Antigone must die” (ii.45-47). Blend seamlessly into a sentence: On the eighth night, the narrator audibly laughs awakening the old man; for a whole hour the narrator “does not move a muscle,” and the old man “does not lie down” (ii ). Antigone believes “she must assert free will” which leads to her death (i.2-3). (scene. Line)  (iv ) // (iv.5 and 7)

Thesis Good: –In “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, Poe uses rhetorical devices, imagery and supernatural events, to create a mood of suspenseful anxiety. Needs Improvement: –Poe uses the gothic element of a spooky setting and suspense in “tell-tale Heart” to create a spooky mood.

Topic Sentence Good: –Poe’s imagery describing the standoff between the narrator and the old man creates suspense. Needs Improvement: –Poe uses the spooky setting of the old man’s house.

Context Good: –Each night the narrator creeps into old man’s room intending to kill him, but his internal conflict stops him for seven nights before the murder. Need Improvement: –He’s like I want to kill him, but then again I don’t he’s nice and means no harm.

Concrete Detail (Quote) Good: –On the eighth night, the narrator audibly laughs awakening the old man; for a whole hour the narrator “does not move a muscle,” and the old man “does not lie down.” Needs Improvement: –“I moved slowly, very, very, slowly, so that I might not disturb the old man’s sleep…. …. For it was not the old man who vexed me but his evil eye.”

Commentary Good: –The repetition of the narrator’s intrusion into the old man’s room each night leads the audience to anticipate a change in the pattern. When the old man finally discovers the intruder on the eighth night, Poe completes the crescendo of suspense with his a description of a prolonged stand-off. This leaves the audience dying for a resolution to the conflict. Needs Improvement: –Poe uses the old man and narrator staring at each other in the dark to create suspense.

Conclusion Good: –Therefore, it is the Poe’s use of imagery that paints the conflict’s intensity to the reader. Needs Improvement: –Therefore, there is suspense.

Needs Improvement Poe uses the spooky setting of the old man’s house. He’s like I want to kill him, but then again I don’t he’s nice and means no harm. “I moved slowly, very, very, slowly, so that I might not disturb the old man’s sleep…. …. For it was not the old man who vexed me but his evil eye.” Poe uses the old man and narrator staring at each other in the dark to create suspense. Therefore, there is suspense.

Final Body Paragraph Poe’s imagery describing the standoff between the narrator and the old man creates suspense. Each night the narrator creeps into old man’s room intending to kill him, but his internal conflict stops him for seven nights before the murder. On the eighth night, the narrator audibly laughs awakening the old man; for a whole hour the narrator “does not move a muscle,” and the old man “does not lie down” (i.34-35). The repetition of the narrator’s intrusion into the old man’s room each night leads the audience to anticipate a change in the pattern. When the old man finally discovers the intruder on the eighth night, Poe completes the crescendo of suspense with his a description of a prolonged stand-off. This leaves the audience dying for a resolution to the conflict. Therefore, it is the Poe’s use of imagery that paints the conflict’s intensity to the reader.

Restatement of Thesis Therefore, Poe’s use of imagery describing the stand-off and supernatural event of the heart audibly ticking effectively create a mood of suspenseful anxiety.
