Agenda:  Using punctuation to unpack poetry: the end- stop line.  Discussion of the text.  Written response to the poem.

Take notes on the following: When looking at poetry, we need to ensure that we always examine the punctuation. The poetry at the ends of lines is exceptionally important as it connects to rhythm and tone.

Types of punctuation: End-stop: a line that ends with STOP punctuation: period, semi- colon, or comma BOYSFAN. ALWAYS circle the STOP punctuation for an end-stopped line. When reading lines, read to the end-stop.

Types of punctuation: Enjambment: the continuation of a syntactic unit from one line or couplet of a poem to the next with no pause. This creates rhythm and tone.

Review “Siren Song”  Circle the end-stop lines.  Take note of the enjambment.  Answer the following questions using the punctuation to help guide you…

Questions on “Siren Song” Answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper and with as much specificity as possible (quotes!): 1.What does the author do? 2.How does she do it? 3.What is the effect?

Homework:  Pick up a copy of Sula from the Book Room.  Read and annotate Theroux’s essay.  Continue revising your college application essays.
