Educational LeadershipEducational Leadership By: March Prensky

Digital Natives Digital Natives = Today’s Students Technology of Today’s Students > ”Us” Hands on Learning = Engaged Students Empathetic Teachers > Knowledge Based Teachers

Shifting Gears Teaching and learning is a shared process between the teacher and student Technology should be encouraged… both inside the classroom and outside the classroom Technology should be implemented into classroom discussions

Student Engagement 21st Century=Electronically-Based Classroom Teachers Need To: Desirable Goals Interesting Choices Immediate and Useful Feedback Opportunities to “level-up”

Collaborating with Students Students should have a voice in classroom decisions Teachers should value student opinions and ideas Teachers and students should “collaborate” to find the best technological practices to use within the classroom

Flexible Organization One-to-One Personalized Instruction Adapt teaching to the learning needs of students Many programs automatically adapt to the learning needs of the players Self-Select Students select their own learning partner This may be a partner from anywhere in the “digital world”

Digital Tools Cell phones-a learning/teaching device? Some countries use mobile phones as a learning tool Do you agree or disagree that cell phones should be banned from school?

Programming “The key skill of the 21 st century” Every student in the 21 st century is a programmer Teachers should enhance students programming skills by extending their technology “toolbox”

Legacy Versus Future Learning “Legacy Learning”=Curriculum of the Past=20% “Future Learning”=Curriculum of the Future=80%

School Versus After School No overlap between after school and in school technologies Teachers and administrators need to familiarize themselves with 21 st century technology

Student Voice “If we don’t stop and listen to kids we serve, value their opinions, and make major changes on the basis of the valid suggestions they offer, we will be left in the 21 st century with school buildings to administer-but with students who are physically and mentally somewhere else.”
