EXCELLING AT WORK Studies in 1 Peter

SUBMIT TO YOUR MASTERS The word is not the common word for “slave” (doulos) but a word meaning “household servant” what we might call “domestics”. A Christian is not a rebel against authority! Just as he submits to the governing authorities, so he submits to the authority of his master.

"In all fear"(with all respect) Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men; knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality. (Colossians 3:22-25)

Let all who are under the yoke as slaves regard their own masters as worthy of all honor so that the name of God and our doctrine may not be spoken against. And let those who have believers as their masters not be disrespectful to them because they are brethren, but let them serve them all the more, because those who partake of the benefit are believers and beloved. Teach and preach these principles. (1 Timothy 6:1-2)

Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, not pilfering, but showing all good faith that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect. (Titus 2:9-10)

OBEY THE DIFFICULT AS WELL AS THE KIND Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable. (1 Peter 2:18) –Agathos (benevolent, kind, generous) –Epieikes (equitable, fair, or mild) –Skolios (crooked, from which we get the disease called “scoliosis”). Here it is used figuratively for the master who is “perverse, wicked, unfair, or surly.)

FOLLOW JESUS’ PATTERN OF SUFFERING Jesus did nothing wrong but suffered greatly. He endured all that He did because He trusted God to deliver Him. He endured all of His sufferings for us.

Peter’s exhortations contain a timely message for today’s workers. And they give us direction when life is painful for us. Let it be a reminder of all that the Lord endured for us and follow in His footsteps.
