Day Six

Review supporting your claim

Review supporting your claim Support can be outside facts evidence from your personal experience or evidence from the prompt itself

Supporting claim quiz Over notes AND how you find support within APS Writing Diagnostic document

3. Addressing Counterclaim Counterclaim- the OPPOSITE side of the argument, opposing side of your claim Some people say…

Steps to addressing the counterclaim 1. Identify the counterclaim (what is the other side saying?) 2. Acknowledging their point of view (why are they saying what they are saying?) 3. Proving the other side wrong

Why is it important to address the counterclaim? Just like in an argument, you want to predict what your opponent is going to say so you can PROVE THEM WRONG and win the argument You have to acknowledge that the other side exists WITHOUT CHANGING YOUR CLAIM

ADDRESSING the counterclaim Not only do we need to IDENTIFY the counterclaim and acknowledge it exists, but we also have to address the points the counterclaim makes To do this, we need to have at least ONE FACT our opponent uses to support their claim

Example 2 Should schools utilize a dress code? Claim: Schools should not utilize a dress code Reason 1: Students work better when they are able to express their individuality Counterclaim: Reason 1:

Example 3 According to the National Institutes of Health, about 64% of Americans are overweight or obese. The obesity issue has ignited various debates and finger-pointing over who is responsible for this health crisis. Lawsuits against fast food chains, like McDonald’s, lay the blame for an individual’s weight gain on the door step of the restaurants themselves, who aggressively advertise, especially to young people, and offer a menu of fat-filled items guaranteed to make you “happy” and satisfied at a great price. The other side of the debate is expressed in the following quote: “Obesity has much to do with our own choices. Changing how we think about food would be a good first step toward improving how we eat, exercise, and take care of ourselves and those around us.” Source: Seattle Post – Intelligencer Editorial, March 11, 2004. Assignment: Do you think that restaurants should be responsible for an individual’s weight gain? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your viewpoint on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experiences, or observations.

Day Seven

Review counterclaim Counterclaim: OPPOSITE of your claim Steps to addressing counterclaim: 1. IDENTIFY 2. ACKNOWLEDGE 3. PROVE IT WRONG

We’ve already discussed ADDRESSING the counterclaim ACKNOWLEDGING their point of view Now, we are going to talk about how to PROVE IT WRONG

Proving it wrong In order to prove the counterclaim wrong, we must first understand the facts the counterclaim is using to make its argument

Example 4 Should the drinking age be lowered to 18? Write your claim and the counterclaim Brainstorm three facts your opponent would use to support the COUNTERCLAIM

THEN…. Prove ONE of the points wrong

Tying it all together Choose one of the four previous examples Write a whole paragraph that addresses the counterclaim following the format below: Some people say __________________________(counterclaim). While some say _________________________________ _________(evidence the opponent uses), ___________________ ________________________________(why the opponent is wrong).

Michael Brown A week ago, the grand jury in Ferguson, MO decided not to indict Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown, 18 year old Since the decision on Monday, there have been a number of riots and peaceful protest throughout the United States

Two volunteers to write on the board Will write class responses on board

What are the most pressing problems in society today?

What do you think is “wrong” within society. Your community What do you think is “wrong” within society? Your community? Your school? Your home?

The Panther Party’s Ten Point Program We will read aloud as a class Then, in partners, you will write down the issue the BPP was trying to fix with each of the ten points After you have this completed and checked off, you will get together with another group of partners and come up with your own Ten Point Program that looks to fix issues TODAY (you can use the issues we generated on the board as guidance)

For example… If we said, “Not enough jobs” was one of the most pressing issues of today, one point we could have in our program could be: We want everyone who is looking for work to be able to find employment

Exit ticket Pick out ONE of your group’s 10 points and MAKE A CLAIM about its importance, using three pieces of evidence to support Point: Claim: Support 1: Support 2: Support 3:
