3. Addressing Counterclaim Counterclaim- the OPPOSITE side of the argument, opposing side of your claim Some people say…

Steps to addressing the counterclaim 1. Identify the counterclaim (what is the other side saying?) 2. Acknowledging their point of view (why are they saying what they are saying?) 3. Proving the other side wrong

Why is it important to address the counterclaim? Just like in an argument, you want to predict what your opponent is going to say so you can PROVE THEM WRONG and win the argument You have to acknowledge that the other side exists WITHOUT CHANGING YOUR CLAIM

ADDRESSING the counterclaim Not only do we need to IDENTIFY the counterclaim and acknowledge it exists, but we also have to address the points the counterclaim makes To do this, we need to have at least ONE FACT our opponent uses to support their claim

The obesity issue has ignited various debates and finger-pointing over who is responsible for this health crisis. Lawsuits against fast food chains, like McDonald’s, lay the blame for an individual’s weight gain on the door step of the restaurants themselves, who aggressively advertise, especially to young people, and offer a menu of fat-filled items guaranteed to make you “happy” and satisfied at a great price. Proving it wrong In order to prove the counterclaim wrong, we must first understand the facts the counterclaim is using to make its argument
