Defining Moments in a Life of Faith Hebrews 10:32-39

Introduction Faith is not a one time event –A walk (2 Corinthians 5:7) –Initial faith only a start (Romans 10:17) Want to discuss defining moments –Crucial moments in a life of faith –How strong is our faith?

First Moment: Point of Conviction Must come to conviction –Faith is deep and abiding (Hebrews 11:1-3) –Not talking about a “preference” Abraham, the father of the faithful –Believed God (Genesis 15:1-6) –Conviction sees the invisible, believes the incredible, and receives the impossible

First Moment: Point of Conviction Conviction requires “coming to self”’ –P–Prodigal son (Luke 15:11-20) –“–“Came to himself”, a defining moment Conviction leads to conversion –P–Pentecost (Acts 2:37) –J–Jailer (Acts 16:25-31) –C–Crucial moments in their lives

SecondMoment: Point of Commitment Faith requires commitment –Jesus’ description (Luke 9:57-62) –Commitment to go the distance (Isaiah 6:8) Lost without commitment –Some come to this point and turn away –Must be committed (Hebrews 10:38, 39)

Second Moment: Point of Commitment Challenges will come –James says “rejoice” (James 1:2-4, 12) –Challenges are practice sessions Abraham was 100 (Hebrews 11:17-19) –Challenges refine us (2 Peter 1:6-9) –Refined iron is valuable (1 Peter 1:6-9)

Third Moment: Times of Conflict Every life has conflict –Conflict with individuals –Conflict with groups Conflict from without –Persecution (1 Peter 4:4) –Tries one’s faith (Mark 4:16, 17) –Overcome (Matthew 5:16; 1 Peter 2:12)

Third Moment: Times of Conflict Conflicts with false teachers –Some are led away (2 Peter 2:16-18) –Face them by not fellowshipping them Conflicts with brethren –Not pleasant –Strive to maintain unity (Ephesians 4:1-3)

Fourth Moment: Calm Times Day to day routine –Not always times of challenge and conflict –Most days will be routine, even dull –Must walk by faith then as well –Abraham walked by faith then too (Genesis 12:8; 13:3, 4, 18; 21:33)

Fourth Moment: Calm Times Not all of life spent on the mountaintop –What we do in between also defines us –Recall Elijah (1 Kings 18:20-40; 19:9) –Has to do with outlook and attitude (1 Peter 3:10-15)

Fourth Moment: Calm Times Must live by faith then as well –Watching and waiting (Proverbs 8:34, 35) –Looking to God (Matthew 6:11, 33) –Praying and studying (Acts 17:11) –Denying self and following (Luke 9:23) –Exhorting and encouraging (Hebrews 3:13)

Conclusion How have you done in facing these moments? Be aware of our need to persevere
