Genesis 14:17-24 Test: Abraham trusted God’s promise that he would have a son. Genesis 15:7-11 Test: Abraham received the promised land by faith, though the fulfillment would not come for many generations. Genesis 17:9-27 Test: At God’s command, Abraham circumcised every male in his family. Genesis 18:1-8 Test: Abraham welcomed strangers, who turned out to be angels. Genesis 18:22-33 Test: Abraham prayed for Sodom. Genesis 20:1-17 Test: Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac.

Covenant: a solemn promise Contrasted with a contract: is a one-way agreement Meaning: only God can break it

Abrahamic Covenant God promises:  To make of Abraham into a great nation and to multiply his seed exceedingly and to make him a father of a great many nations.  To bless Abraham and make him great.  To make Abraham a blessing to all the families of the earth.  To bless those who bless him and curse those who curse him.  To give Abraham and his seed forever all the land which he could see.  To give him a sign of the covenant (circumcision).

The Importance of the Covenant for Abraham  gave land to nomads  honored his character from early on- “righteousness” rewarded  established a lineage for the coming Messiah The importance for us: It’s a “one-way” deal

Defining the Character of Isaac

Defining the Character of Jacob

 The bandage was wound around the wound.  The farm was used to produce produce.  The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.  We must polish the Polish furniture.  He could lead if he would get the lead out.  The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.  Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.  When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.  I did not object to the object.

There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France (surprise!). Quicksand works slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write, but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth?

One goose two geese, so one moose, two meese? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? AND… Why doesn't "Buick" rhyme with "quick"?
