Shift from rural to cities New job opportunities drove ppl to move to the cities Most of Europe’s urban areas at least doubled in population Factories developed in clusters…to stay near an energy source London-Europe’s largest city w/ a population of over 1 million by 1800
Cities unprepared for the large influx of ppl Lacked adequate housing, education and police protection Unpaved streets had no drains Lots of garbage Lived in dirty shelters Sickness was widespread
Wanted to keep the machines running as much as possible Worked 14 hour shifts, 6 days a week Same job everyday!!! Doesn’t change Factories not well-lit or clean Many industrial accidents occurred (esp. in the coal minees)
Poverty for the working class Saw little improvement in their lives Some frustrated as they were being replaced by machines But a wealthier, middle class emerges Made up of skilled workers, professionals, businesspeople, and wealthy farmers Later, made up of gov’t employees, doctors, lawyers and mangers of factories
Created jobs Contributed to the wealth of the nation Fostered technological innovations and inventions Increased production of goods=cheaper to buy Provided hope for improvement for better life
Children as young as 6 worked in factories Worked 14 hours a day Short break for lunch and dinner To keep children awake, they would get beaten Many children injured on the job Work=no school Factory Act of 1819: restricted working age and hours
