Bringing together leading research institutions to advance electric ship concepts. Power Interconnect Tool Angela Card Mississippi State University January 11, 2016

Bringing together leading research institutions to advance electric ship concepts. Power Interconnect in S3D Power Interconnect –Refers to technologies such as cables and bus pipes Objective –To incorporate the power interconnection design into early stage design tools Power density for power interconnection Allows for design, evaluation, and comparison of different design configurations with different power interconnection components 2

Bringing together leading research institutions to advance electric ship concepts. Using the Power Interconnect in S3D Selection of cable – Notional (_cable) – Cable in existing S3D Equipment Catalog Requires updates/uniformity to existing catalog Inputs to “Cable Calculator” – Length from Naval Arch tool – Max current based on simulated scenarios in Electrical Designer – Voltage as specified in Electrical Designer – Frequency as specified in Electrical Designer

Bringing together leading research institutions to advance electric ship concepts. Running the Power Interconnect Tool Select the desired cable(s) Initially reset all attributes Change “Automatically Compute Parameters” to “TRUE” –Makes the call to MSU’s “cable calculator” Length of cable required was reset, must re-obtain value –Close Electrical Designer –Open Naval Arch Tool –Under Distributed Systems, “Refresh Systems” –Close Naval Arch Tool –Open Electrical Designer Obtain current from Electrical Designer –Run required simulations (to ensure max current is obtained) –25% built in margin added to current value –Issues Notional cable needs optimization, presently selects largest cable to handle load (excess capacity) Consider voltage drop calculations to determine current 4

Bringing together leading research institutions to advance electric ship concepts. Simple Example with Notional Cable 5 Before calling Cable Calculator After calling Cable Calculator *Note: Values in blue were updated values

Bringing together leading research institutions to advance electric ship concepts. Simple Example with Catalog Cable 6 Notional Cable Specific Cable *Note: Values in blue were updated values

Bringing together leading research institutions to advance electric ship concepts. “Power Interconnect” Component It currently reflects the “cable bundle” –Distinguishes between a single cable and the “cable bundle” required to meet the load –In the future, it could allow choices to include “bus pipe” or “HTS cable” Attributes –Number of specified cables necessary to meet the load (fed to MIT’s routing algorithm) (Number of cables per bundle, per phase) –Outer diameter of one specified cable (fed to MIT’s routing algorithm) –Bending radius of one specified cable (fed to MIT’s routing algorithm) –Weight per unit length (this will be for the bundle, per phase) –Resistance per unit length (this will be for the bundle, per phase) –Inductance per unit length (this will be for the bundle, per phase) –Rated Continuous Current per Cable (reinforce to the user the current rating is per cable, especially for notional cable). –Rated Voltage –Rated Frequency
