Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 3 The Tevatron About 1300 cryogenic devices including –774 (6.6m) dipoles of two types (9 tons) –180 standard (1.8m) quads of two types (F & D) –About 50 other quads (matching and IR) –About 220 “spool pieces” with correctors in 9 types –About special cryo devices (bypasses, end boxes, etc.) –About 30 (?) conventional magnets (septa, kickers, etc.) Operating since 1984 as fixed target and pbar-p collider

Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 4 Magnet Testing Testing and retesting of spares and standard magnets Qualification of new magnets. –Occasional changes in the Tevatron configuration Studies performed at the request of the Accelerator Division –This is a major activity of MTF, in addition to magnet R&D and LHC magnet tests The tests include both superconducting and conventional magnets

Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 5 Facilities & Tooling Fermilab MTF has two stands available to test & measure Tevatron magnets –Not including warm stand –Maximum during production was six cold stands –Requires a refrigerator. We have a 1.5 kW job capable of 1.8 K operation Fermilab MTF also has one LHC stand, a place for lead tests, a 4.5m vertical dewar (with 30 kA supply), three stands for conventional magnets, a probe shop and software & instrument development. All this requires a skilled worker set!

April 12, 2006 P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 12 Conclusions Have a small (few stand) cold-test operation always available. Have the support facilities and staff for operation and improvement of the facility. Keep, and renew the skilled labor (scientists, engineers, technicians) required to do all this work. They will keep busy doing the R&D work needed for the future of CERN.
