2.1 Traffic Signs Signs are specific to:  Color  Shape  Message  Function  Regulatory – controls traffic/movement  Warning – alert you to possible hazards/conditions  Guide – give directions/information

2.1 Traffic Signs Color Red – Stop, Yield, or Prohibited Yellow – Warning (alerts you to possible hazards/conditions) White – Regulatory (controls traffic/movement) Orange – Construction Black – Regulatory Green – Guide (give direction/information) Blue – Service Brown – Recreation or cultural interest

2.1 traffic signs Speed Limits Basic Speed Law – law stating that you may not drive faster than is safe and prudent for existing conditions, regardless of posted speed limits Minimum Speed Limit –speed limit to keep traffic moving safely by not allowing drivers to drive slower than a certain speed Advisory Speed Limit – speed limit set for special conditions such as sharp curves

2.2 Traffic Signals Traffic Lights are specific meaning by color Red Light – come to a full stop (behind stop line, crosswalk) Yellow Light – make every effort to stop safely when a yellow light appears Green Light – proceed only if the intersection is clear

2.2 Traffic Signals Arrows – direction only Red Arrow – stop – you may not go in this direction Yellow Arrow – the red arrow is about to appear – do not continue in this direction Green Arrow – go in the direction of the arrow

2.3 Roadway Markings Roadway markings – give you warning or direction – lines, words or figures painted on the roadway. Sometimes special markings are used on curbs and other surfaces Solid Yellow – indicates two-way traffic and you may NOT pass or cross Broken Yellow – indicates two-way traffic and you MAY pass or cross

Stop Sign vs. yield sign Stop – always come to a full stop, yield right of way to pedestrians or other vehicles in or approaching the intersection Yield – Always slow or stop and give right of way to traffic when approaching
