model answer: I believe that building a large factory near my community has advantages as well as disadvantages, but the disadvantages clearly outweigh the advantages. Therefore I will definitely oppose the operation of a factory in my area. For several reasons, I think that a new factory will not be a good addition to my neighborhood. First of all, factories often bring pollution, as they are prone to contaminating the local air and water. Second of all, factories make noise which will surely disrupt daily life. Another important aspect of building a new factory near by is that it will make the local traffic heavy. As a result of this, the amount of traffic congestion will increase, as well as contamination of the air with smog. So, all these obviously will not make one's life happier and healthier in my community. From the other side, I believe that a new factory will bring some advantages to my community, however these will be minimal. First of all, the new production center will bring various new job opportunities. Many specialists will be required to work there and they may also train local engineers. Second of all, I think many local community facilities will have to be renovated to obtain reliable supply of water and electricity. For example, it may be wishful thinking, but some old pipes or other infrastructure may be changed. Another important benefit of this is that the local roads, in order to manage the increasing traffic will surely be rebuilt and widened. However, I do not think that listed above benefits are worth all these troubles including water contamination and the constant pollution of air. From my point of view all factories must be built far from our communities because they can be really harmful for people's health.

T2- Factory: Problems 1. Introduction Don't say “I support the second” Its not clear. Don't say “I agree with the former” either Must choose a side!! “Do you support or oppose the factory”

T2- Factory: Problems 2. Body If you discuss the other side, you must use it only to make your argument stronger. Refute it! To get IELTS 7.0 you need your opinion in all 4 paragraphs. Add your opinions or suggestions “I think the factory could be located to the edge of town and build a small rail to provide workers with access, then we could avoid some of the negative points such as noise pollution”

T2- Factory: Problems Correct Idioms: Double-sided sword, double-edged sword Every coin has two sides On the one hand, on the other hand In the flesh Because these idioms cannot change, they must be used exactly. Connectives are important

Before the most important match of my life, I asked my martial arts mentor Mr. Gunthor some advice. He advocated me to "Go to see different kinds of fighters and accumulate more fighting experience." (Smith 2013) What he said really came true when I fought with my second opponent. The young boy first looked kind and was not the aggressive type which confused me and made me not want to hurt him. But after I kicked him down a few times, I gained confidence and began to win the match. Woks Cited: Smith, Peter. Personal interview. 20 Mar, 2013.

Metaphors and Similes Make comparisons of two dissimilar things. Similes use the word as/like Metaphors do not Ex: Simile – Bill was like an annoying bird chirping in my ear Ex: Metaphor – Bill was an annoying bird chirping in my ear

Metaphors and Similes Ex: Simile – Bill ran as fast as a cheetah in the school marathon. Ex: Metaphor – Bill was a cheetah in the school marathon. Similes make the sentence meaning more clear and therefore are used for rare comparisons. Metaphors are more ambiguous and are more poetic.

Common Similes "as old as dirt" "slow as molasses" "white as a ghost". “run like the wind”

Common Metaphors Bill is a pig This room is an oven. = a hot room The crowd began to simmer down. = calm down You are a recipe for disaster = someone who's personality will always cause trouble (note: “recipe for disaster” is a set phrase you cannot change it) A wire is a highway for electrons (it is not actually a highway) Veins are highways for blood The lawyer grilled the witness = the witness felt so hot due to questioning by the lawyer

Very Common Metaphors – Cooking Boiling mad = very angry The netizens flamed Bill on the blog = said bad things about him James cooked Bill = yelled at him He knew that he was going to be toast when he faced his parents

Activity: Make a sentence using: To be boiling mad To flame someone To cook someone To be toast Make a sentence 1-4.
