Writing to DESCRIBE

The main aspect of writing to describe is to be descriptive…..use your imagination to paint a picture Make the reader want to go there or be apart of it…..DON’T BE BORING!!!!

Techniques So how can we NOT be boring well….use some really descriptive techniques such as: ADJECTIVES (describing words) COLOURS SENSES SIMILES (as or like…as busy as a bee) METAPHORS (saying something is something else….the classroom was a prison) PERSONIFICATION (giving an object human characteristics…..the table danced with joy)

Set the scene if you are asked to “describe a bus journey” Don’t simply say…I got on the bus! YAWN-BORING What did the bus look like /smell like? How were you feeling when you got on the bus? Why were you getting on the bus? Think about a really descriptive opening, the examiner doesn’t really want to know you got on the bus to go to the shops…he wants to know the techniques you can use to DESCRIBE that journey!

Describe D…..Don’t make it boring E.....Explore different techniques S.....Senses and Similes C…..Colours R.....Really go to town with I..... Imagery and imagination B.... Be brave and be E.....Exciting WITH METAPHORS and PERSONIFICATION
