Population Studies Where are the people. Page 182 NCG

At the end of this lesson I will be able to: Say what is meant by “population density”. Say how resources can affect population densities giving an example of a country. Say how terrain can affect population densities giving an example of a country. Say how social factors can affect population densities giving an example of a country. Say how historical factors can affect population densities giving an example of a country.

Page 182 Population density means the number of people living in a square kilometer. 1 KM

Resources People tend to gather and live in areas that have the resources they need. –Water –Food –Fuel –Good land –Transport e.g rivers, canals, sea

Italy Has more resources in the North than in the South and so is more densley populated in the north.

Terrain This means landscape. People don’t like places that are too high, too dry, too wet, too rugged.

Brazil The Amazon Basin in Brazil is sparsely populated. It is called the green hell due to the terrain, climate and dense rainforests.

Social Factors Employment Enjoyment Amenities Education

Brazil Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo are on the coast. People flock there for employment and the cities continue to grow.

Ireland Dublin - employment and enjoyment West less populated.

Historical Factors Things that happened in history that have influenced population density. Brazil – portugese colonists settled on the coast. Ireland – Famine caused rapid population decline in the west of Ireland – it continued to delcine for a further 100 years.

At the end of this lesson I will be able to: Say what is meant by “population density”. Say how resources can affect population densities giving an example of a country. Say how terrain can affect population densities giving an example of a country. Say how social factors can affect population densities giving an example of a country.
