Service Learning Not just for engineers!

What is it? Based on a program at Purdue University that integrates community service and project management into the class curriculum. “Engineering Service Learning at UC Merced allows students to join faculty guided teams that are solving real engineering problems for real clients as a key component of their formal education. Our client organizations are local and regional not-for-profit organizations that would not otherwise be able to afford engineering services. Students gain more in-depth understanding about the profession of engineering earlier in their careers, and obtain experiences that contribute to their portfolios when they are ready to hit the job market. Most important, the Service Learning experience keeps students engaged in their engineering education and on the path towards becoming a professional.” -Jeff Wright Dean of the School of Engineering

Survey outcome In spring 2008 around 10% of students of UCM were surveyed. Students were asked to rate their knowledge of the program from 1-10 and the average came out to be a mere 3.28, showing a lack of awareness for the program. Also, 65% of the students, when asked who could take service learning, said everyone. Is this true? Absolutely. The Service Learning program is available to all students.
