Density Essential Question: How do you calculate density when you have the appropriate data?

What is density? Definition: Degree of consistency measured by the quantity of mass per unit volume. Density is important because it is a physical property. Density is a physical property because density depends on the chemical composition of the object (Ex, 1g of silver has the same density as 1 ton of silver) Every substance on Earth has its own unique density This means we can identify substances by their densities

What is needed to calculate density? In order to calculate density we need to know mass and volume of a substance.

What is Mass? Definition: The amount of matter in an object. Measured in g or Kg.

What is volume? Is a unit of measurement that is measured in terms of length, and can be defined as the amount of three-dimensional space an object occupies. Example: the volume of your bottle. How many liters is in it.

Do Now:

How to calculate volume? What is a rectangular solid? A rectangular solid is an object that has all right angles Its volume can be calculated by multiplying its length, width, and height. V=l x w x h

What is the volume? Problem #1 V= l x w x h

What is the volume? Problem #2 V= l x w x h

How to calculate volume of a cylinder? a solid geometric figure with straight parallel sides and a circular or oval cross section.

How to calc volume of a cylinder? Problem #1

How to calculate density?

What is the density? Problem #1 If the cube has a mass of 6000g, what is its density?

What is the density? Problem #2 If the cube has a mass of 270g, what is its density?
