Establishing a Purpose for Reading:  Preview the piece and establish your purpose for reading

Analyzing Text Structure:  Scan the piece and observe how it is organized Are there headings? Are there subsections? Is there an order?

Identifying Main Ideas:  Sections become the main ideas  Read one section at a time Identify main ideas Note supporting details How is the idea developed through important and less important details?
