Presenter Tips & Tricks – remove this slide 1.Start strong: “Good morning/afternoon. Welcome to WASWUG Or, how are you enjoying WASWUG so far? I am, and in this session I will be presenting on Fifth level 2.Demonstrate within the application unless the presentation is on conceptual functions, such as how data is being calculated or what is occurring behind the scenes. 3.Be conversational and engaging. Make eye contact with individuals as you speak. Ask pertinent and relevant questions when possible. 4.Pause after asking questions or introducing a new concept or terminology to allow the attendee to process the question/concept. 5.Repeat attendee’s questions, or verify everyone heard the question before you respond. 6.For crowded sessions, help manage seating prior to the start of your presentation. Ask folks to raise their hand if they have an empty seat next to them.

10 Tips for presenting at WASWUG –remove this slide Prepare – 1.Make a plan, find a lesson plan template (like a teacher) you can use, think about the process of chunking your presentation into small bits of information. When you break up a presentation into small parts it is easier for you to deliver. 2.Think about when you first learned the topic or when you’ve helped someone else with the topic, and use that knowledge to anticipate what the attendees might find helpful. Knowing what questions might be asked helps you manage fears of the unknown. 3.Use Connect to connect with folks who plan to attend your session. Find out what they’re interested in and their level of experience. 4.Make sure the data you’re going to use is set up with the right examples and scenarios.

10 Tips for presenting at WASWUG –remove this slide Practice – 5.Practice in front of someone who knows your topic. Practice in front of someone who doesn’t know your topic. Make adjustments based on feedback. a. Does it flow logically? b. Are there any gaps? c. Can you, and have you, made connections (if they exist) between each part of your presentation? d. How’s your timing – is the presentation too long, or too short?

10 Tips for presenting at WASWUG –remove this slide Present – 6.Become familiar with your presentation room before your scheduled session. Knowing the environment helps settle nerves. 7.Involve the attendees by asking questions or for their experiences. Help them feel invested in the topic and content. 8.If someone asks a question you don’t know the answer to, that’s okay but be willing to perhaps work with them to find the solution (after the session) or find a coordinator who can help. 9.Always have your materials (PPT, documents, reports) on a flash drive for backup. 10. Ask a friend or colleague to attend for moral support. If they know your topic, that’s a bonus and you can call on them as a resource (but only if you really need to, remember it’s your presentation).

Instructions for Reference Materials – remove this slide 1. If the material you’re presenting comes from a WSIPC Guide, indicate that on the “Reference Materials – WSIPC Guide” slide in this PPT. 2. If the material you’re presenting is not from a WSIPC Guide, please make a separate handout, that includes information about your topic, using the WASWUG Handout template. Then use the “Reference Materials – Handout” slide in this PPT to let attendees know. a. Include details in the handout such as path, screen shots, brief explanations.

Laptops at the conference –remove this slide  Each conference room has a laptop, projector, and screen provided for your use during your session.  If you intend to use your own laptop, test it thoroughly. Before your session connect it to the projector and run all of the applications you’ll be using. Some computers will automatically adjust configurations when attached to a projector. This can be problematic.
