Precision Agriculture 1. Definitions 2. Watching the world 3. Local Technology 4. Data 5. Analysis 6. Irrigation 7. Insurance 8. FO Services 9. Crop health 10. The future

1. Definitions precision agriculture is a farming management concept based on observing, measuring and responding to inter and intra-field variability in crops. By collecting real-time data on weather, soil and air quality, crop maturity, predictive analytics can be used to make smarter decisions. The practice of precision agriculture was enabled by the advent of GPSGPS

2.Watching the world Sentinel (EU), SMAP(US), +100s more NASA

3.Local Technology UNICEF GPS

ZB ZB ZB “Unstructured data doubles every 2 years” 1 Zetabyte = 1 trillion Gigabytes 4.Data

5.Analysis Awhere.com Big Data means Agile not just Smart

6.Irrigation 2015, Gezira Sudan, Farmers harvested 4 x 2014 harvest - 12 sacks wheat/acre. Income US$13,400 from 8-acre farm, compared with loss of 1,000 in 2014 All 44 farmers increased their crop productivity, wheat, chickpea and onion. Irrigated more often, but applied less water and increased yields by 60%. GEZIRA Sudan

7.Insurance ILRI & Cornell launched an insurance scheme using satellite imagery in 2010 to predict and compensate insured pastoralists for livestock losses due to drought. Now includes crowd-sourced information on whether the vegetation seen via satellite was palatable for animals or not.

8.Farmers Organisations Services The Market-led, User-owned ICT4Ag Enabled Information Service (MUIIS) project, will use satellite data to improve production & marketing prospects for producers of maize, soya beans and sesame. Netherlands Space Office: Uganda CTA,EAFF, AGRA, aWHere, EARS, eLEAF & Mercy Corps

9.Crop health Trimble Greenseeker – Hand held assesment $500 Drones for local aerial sensing

10. The near future Pilot projects G4AW, CTA, EAFF Data harmonisation linkages GODAN New data sources from Sentinel Drones for ICT4Ag mobile development New equipment. Laser levelling, Robot harvest/planting.
