Examining GCSE Latin … an update

Current situation GCSE entry numbers stabilised at about 10,000 (1.3% of population) 2.5% rise in entries from ind./grammars, 2.5% fall in entries from non-selective state schools (rel. to population growth) Year 11 population set to fall for next 7 years Average school entry size: –Grammar and independents: 16 –Non-selective states: 12

Average teaching time to GCSE Advised ‘Guided Learning Hours’ = Average for all schools= 272 hours Average for ind./grammar= 288 hours Average for state comprehensives = 212 hours

Latin for the “93% club” 74% consider the level of content greater than most other subjects 77% perceive the grading is more severe than other subjects 94% feel the examination is not accessible by the full ability range Account for 47% of schools offering Latin Account for 17% of GCSE entries
