SPANISH AT VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL REGISTRATION DAY

SPANISH COURSES – (FULL YEAR)  Spanish 1  Spanish II  Spanish III  Spanish IV  Spanish AP (*DMACC credit)  Developmental Spanish I  Spanish III for Heritage Speakers

SHOULD I TAKE THE NEXT LEVEL? YES  If you passed the previous level with a solid B or above  If you have the work ethic and determination to do well in the next level NO  You struggled off and on throughout your current level  You had to retake many tests (or should’ve to truly understand)  Your teacher has suggested retaking your current level  You lack work ethic and determination to do well in the next level

WHAT’S REQUIRED TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL? Nothing! Wait….what??!!!! Are you serious?

WHAT’S REQUIRED TO GET INTO COLLEGE? UNIVERSITY OF IOWA Liberal Arts and Sciences students must complete 4 years in a single language to graduate from the university; Business students must complete 4 years in one language or 2 years each in two languages. Students who have taken the requisite years in high school have fulfilled these requirements. The Tippie College of Business strongly encourages students to complete four years of a single language in high school. By completing fourth-level proficiency in the same world language, students will fulfill requirements for the Tippie College of Business and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Liberal Arts Sciences Business EngineeringNursing 2 years in a single language* 4 years in a single language* OR 2 years in two languages*

REQUIREMENTS Iowa State  2 years of a single world language (Note: A minimum of 3 years of a single world language in high school meets the world language graduation requirement in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Three years or more of a single world language are strongly recommended for students who wish to continue their work in that language at the university.) UNI  2 years of one world language in high school with a C- or above in the last term meet the university graduation requirement. The university highly recommends that students fulfill this requirement while in high school.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO GRADUATE FROM UNIVERSITY OF IOWA IN A GENERAL EDUCATION MAJOR?  Complete the fourth year in a world language in high school; or  Complete four semesters* in an approved General Education world language course sequence at the University of Iowa [note the exception for Latin], or the equivalent courses at another college or university, or during study abroad; ornote the exception for Latin  Pass a written and oral achievement test measuring proficiency in a world language taught at the University of Iowa, equivalent to that usually attained after four semesters of college study; or  Achieve a passing score on Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or other approved college-level world languages examination program.

BUT I DON’T LIKE SPANISH!  Your Goal: Have a solid language foundation (Spanish 1 and 2)  Take your current level again  Take the next level if you did well in your current level  If you take a year off, prepare for college exam senior year (tutor, meet with Spanish teacher, etc)

LANGUAGE CLASSES High School  Slower pace  Free  Taught in English & Spanish  Class every day (attendance requirements) College  Faster pace  $$$$$  Taught in Spanish  Class every day (attendance requirements)
