What is Beowulf? BEOWULF is a long epic poem composed during the 7th century. It is anonymous. It tels about the deeds and legends of the Anglo-Saxons. The poem was written in Old English and it comes from an oral tradition.

Old English After the defeate of the Celts, the Anglo-Saxons imposed their language. It was called Old English and It was a mixture of Germanic dialects. Where the Anglo-Saxonscame from Place of Beowulf deeds.

Oral Tradition Old English poetry was composed orally by bards. The Anglo-Saxon called them scops. Their poets learned their composition by heart. To do this they made use of sound devices to stick phrases in their mind and in mind of the audience. Sound devices:  alliterations  rhymes  kennings Scops provided a lot of information about their society. Typical lyre

Society In the epic poem Beowulf you cand find a lot of information about Anglo-Saxons’ society and life. The Structure of Society They were:  warriors  seamen  pagans Old people were attributed great importance in society. Family unit Clan Tribes

Warriors were of umost importance in Anglo-Saxon society because it was based on war.

Seamen. The Anglo-Saxons travelled by ship. Their typical ship was called Drakkar. It were fast and it was able to cover long distances.

The Anglo-Saxon were pagans. They believed in omens and they thanked their gods for their protection.

 Honour  Generosity  Loyalty  Relatives  Courage Values Beowulf follows all these values.

Who is Beowulf? Beowulf is a hero. He can do what common people cannot do. He is called to help Hrothgar, king of the Danes, to free his land from Grendel, a monster in human shape.

Beowulf’s Description Beowulf is described with extremely positive connotations:  He was not like any other man “alive”  He had a god-like nature.  He was generous.  He was ambitious.  People trusted Beowulf because he was loyal  He was a clever seaman.
