SENIOR TIMELINE!

September Check transcript to make sure you have all the credits you need for your choice of school. Take the SAT? Check and see if the college requires it. Possibly the ACT. Start narrowing down the list of colleges for applications. What schools should I apply to? Get applications online, download them if you want to send it by mail. We have some applications available in guidance and the “Go Center”. Make sure you download all of the application.

College Searches College websites Come down to the Go To College Center and look at the college books for information and websites.

October October 6: SAT reg. deadline for 08/28 test-late October 3, 2013: SAT Registration Deadline (Nov. 2 nd Test) October 4: College Fair/Ed-Op (OW Gym) October 9, 2014 College Application Day (Please see Workbooks) Work on and complete applications (Ask teachers, parents, and friends to read first drafts). Create a file for each of your college choices, and keep it organized. Use the calendar provided to keep up with deadlines. Have standardized test scores sent to your list of colleges. Continue working on scholarship applications. Stay FOCUSED!!

October cont… Request letters of recommendation Complete early decision or early action applications according to deadlines (Check at to make sure you understand your rights and obligations). Attend local or regional college fairs and financial aid fairs with your parents. File a NCAA Clearinghouse application for Division I and II sports. All test scores and HS transcripts must be sent directly to the Clearinghouse. Test scores on transcripts will not be accepted. Submitting Applications Some paper applications are available in guidance, you must request paper applications with Mrs. Huffman in guidance or Mrs. Zeigler or Mr. Jenkins in the “Go Center” For each application, you must submit a Transcript Request Form. Forms are available in guidance and the “Go Center”. Apply early. Be aware of rolling admissions. Don’t assume anything. Even if you match the college’s profile, certain departments have capacities. Consider visits, overnight stays and interviews when possible at your top college choices.

Submitting Applications cont. Be aware of deadlines!!! Do not wait until the deadline to mail (it may not get there in time) Many colleges have a deadline of March 1 USC, Clemson,NC A&T : December 1 Harvard, Dartmouth,Emory: January 1 CHECK WITH THE COLLEGES!!!

Submitting Applications cont. Begin brainstorming ideas for your college essays If you are submitting a paper application : 1. Enclose application 2. Check for application fee or Fee Waiver 3. Essay if required 4. Any other required materials (i.e. letters of recommendations) 5. Mail in large envelope to Admissions Office of the college with return address & proper postage 6. Complete a Transcript Request Form, and the counseling office will mail the transcript and application if necessary to the college.

Letters of Recommendation Have Teachers, Principal or other chosen representatives complete letters of recommendations to be submitted in any college or scholarship application packages.

November 11/2: SAT & SAT II at Orangeburg-Wilkinson (CEEB Code ) (Register by Oct. 3) Follow up with teacher recommendations Send thank you notes to teachers completing a recommendation Mid-November: Start submitting applications. Keep in mind college deadlines.

December Cont. A lot of scholarships are becoming available. Check the scholarship newsletter to be sure you don’t miss any. If you are behind, this can be a great time to catch up. It is not too late to apply! Take time over your winter break to complete applications and any required essays.

Searching for scholarships The scholarship newsletter is updated frequently, and is located in Guidance and the “Go Center” Search Google or other search engine to look for scholarships for scholarships Check Planet High School Check with organizations and workplaces that your parents belong to or work.

Financial Aid: Apply early. Apply right You and your family should save this year’s pay stubs to estimate income on aid forms that you’ll file. Men 18 or older must register for the selective service to receive federal financial aid.

January January 1, 2014: First day to submit FAFSA (Submit early for maximum aid) Complete federal income tax returns early this year. This information will be collected on the FAFSA to determine your financial aid eligibility. Contact the admissions office at any schools to which you submitted regular-decision applications to make sure these schools have everything they need from you.

February Did any of the schools you applied to request your transcript showing first semester senior grades? If so, have you requested they be sent yet? Paper FAFSA Student Aid reports within four weeks. Electronic reports- expect results within 3-5 days. (EFC – expected family contribution) Complete scholarship applications

March March 1: Deadline for many applications Contact financial aid office at the schools to which you have applied –check on appropriate application materials Colleges will be sending out “offers” in the form of an Award letter with 2-3 weeks given to respond.

April From those schools that accept you, compare your acceptance letters and your financial aid and scholarship offers. Submit copies of all acceptance letters and scholarships to Mrs. Haynes in Guidance. Evaluate your options and make your acceptance choice. Find out what deposits you will be required to make to ensure your place in the freshman class. When you decide, notify the school by letter of your commitment, submitting any required deposit check.

May Many schools require the acceptance notification letter by May 1 st. Housing deposits may be due on this date too. Check with the college. Take the Advanced Placement exams for any AP subjects you’ve taken in high school. If you were placed on a waiting list for a particular school, and you decided to wait for an opening, contact that school and let them know you are still interested. Final Exams Senior Awards Night Complete the Senior Checkout Form to have your final transcripts sent to the school you will be attending. Graduation

July/August During the summer before your freshman year, you should participate in any summer orientation program for incoming freshmen and make any necessary arrangements for any medical exams or health insurance coverage if you have not previously done so. Register for classes at your college Prepare for your new adventure Start packing……

QUESTIONS??? Take time and plan. AS A REVIEW: 4 main steps to take: 1. Register for the appropriate tests 2. Submit your applications for admission 3. Compare acceptance offers from schools 4. And finally, after you’ve accepted a school’s final offer, complete the Senior Checkout Form to have your final transcript sent to that school.

Announcements Students who are interested in dual credit courses (Middle College) at Octech for second semester and did not take courses during first semester need to complete an application and stop by the “Go Center” to meet with Mrs. Quick on September 25, 2013 or September 26, She will be here from 8:00 a.m – 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25 th and from 8:00 – 2:00 on Thursday, September 26th.

Announcements Students who will be first time Middle College participants, will need to complete an application. Students qualify based upon SAT, ACT, PSAT or COMPASS scores. For second semester, students must take a minimum of two classes and a maximum of four classes. All interested students are asked to stop by the “Go Center” to meet with Mrs. Quick with your completed application on September 25, 2013 (8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) or September 26, 2013 (8:00 a.m – 2:00 p.m.).

Complete College Application Day Workbook before October 9, IGP/Senior appointments are scheduled in thirty minute intervals, please be on time. The Chamber of Commerce Scholarship application needs to be submitted to guidance by October 4 th for guidance to the deliver the applications to the chamber by October 8 th, 2014.
