Presentation transcript:

In this presentation we will cover What is it? What are the benefits? How will it work in our clinic? Supporting materials

What is breed-specific health care? each pet is treated as a unique individual, carrying specific traits and risks relating to their Breed, Genetics, Sex, Age, Weight & Lifestyle Based most recent research and advances in veterinary genetic testing and prevalence of disease Advanced & personalised wellness care model that allows the health-care team to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases earlier and more effectively than with traditional veterinary care.

NAME A BREEDS FREQUENTLY SEEN AT OUR PRACTICE ##Name of #6 Breed ##Name of #5 Breed ##Name of #4 Breed Name of #3 Breed##Name of #3 Breed Name of #2 Breed##Name of #2 Breed## Name of #1 Breed

We’ll provide a booklet summary handout to each client with top five breeds and to all mixed-breed dog owners. Handout provided to client when she enters the clinic. Vet / Nurse asks if the client has had a chance to review the handout once in room and discuss breed-related health considerations during the visit. Interested clients will acquire the Personalised Genetic Health Book

What will I need to do? Read through the sample booklets to become familiar with the information provided. Follow our processes for providing breed-specific client education tools. Become comfortable speaking to clients about breed- specific health care. Proactively contribute to the success of the program. Be willing to try something new. Be patient. Make constructive suggestions. Celebrate victories.

How do I talk to clients about breed-specific health care? “We now offer breed-specific health care because your pet is truly unique. The health considerations of a Chihuahua differ considerably from those of a Great Dane. In addition to considering your dog’s age, weight, nutrition, and lifestyle, knowing her breed allows us to customize health recommendations for her. Some breeds are more likely to have certain health conditions that we’ll want you to watch out for at home, and some that we’ll want to perform specific diagnostic tests for here in the clinic. Together, we can ensure that Fluffy has the best medical care and quality of life possible.”

Talking to Clients Exercise In your own words, how would you tell a client that your practice now offers breed-specific health care? Reword the previous example or write your own Include the main points: Boosts quality of care by helping pets live longer, healthier lives by diagnosing health concerns at an earlier age Individualized health-care plans based on breed susceptibilities, lifestyle, age, weight, activity, and nutritional status

How can I proactively contribute? “Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the Titanic.” – Anonymous “Patience is the ability to idle your motor when you feel like stripping your gears.” – Barbara Johnson “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Mohandas Gandhi “Celebrate what you want to see more of.” – Thomas J. Peters

What more do I need to learn? Get to know the cases where breed-specific health care is making a significant difference. Learn the health considerations that each breed is pre- disposed to (see example for golden retriever). Be able to speak to clients about specific breed considerations. “Cocker spaniels are prone to dry eyes. Measuring the amount of tears Heidi is producing helps us to catch this problem early, before she develops painful sores in her eyes. We’ve included tear testing in Heidi’s wellness panel today.”
