Current Grading System Practice is be graded in year two and three, and contributes to the overall degree classification for the student at the end of the programme. Grading practice rewards students who demonstrate a high standard of competence and achievement in clinical practice; and who demonstrate integration of management and leadership skills in their clinical placement settings.

Assessment Students are assessed in the competencies identified by the mentor and student for each placement area. The mentor indicates the level of achievement the student has met for each identified competency. The level of achievement awarded, from 0 to 6, should reflect the skills, knowledge and values pertinent to the stage of the student’s programme and the student should demonstrate these both in the practice area and with the evidence collated in their e-portfolio

SCORE 0 Clear failure refer 1 Fail refer 2 Satisfactory pass 3 Good pass 4 Very good pass 5 Excellent pass 6 Outstanding Pass Grade Bands (0 – 10)(11 – 39)(40 – 49)(50 – 59)(60 – 69)(70 – 84)(85 – 100) Application of knowledge, skills and values in relation to nursing practice. continued A minimum score of 2 must be achieved in each competency for year two and three. The student must also achieve a pass (40%) in the O/ISCE for the Skills and Practice Module in each year in order to progress to the next stage of the programme

FAQ Can students be graded at 6 if they are in Year 2 of the Programme? YES If a student is referred in only 1 criteria, is this a refer for the placement? YES If a student achieves all the criteria, but the mentor still judges the student not to be meeting the requirement for the Stage of learning, can they still refer the student? YES, but…

FAQ If the mentor does not undertake a formative assessment, does this affect the summative assessment? YES Does the mentor have to see the evidence the student provides? YES What if the student is between grades, can they be given for example, 3/4? NO

Failure to achieve If the student is given a score of 0 or 1 (referral grade) for any competency then a Development Plan will be negotiated between the student, mentor and/or PDT member, personal tutor providing guidance on how to develop this skill/competence further for resubmission. The student may work on any referred competencies during their last practice placement in each year of the programme and use copies of the resubmission form.

NMC & Programme requirements Under University Regulations the student is only allowed two attempts at practice (summative assessments). At present, a refer at 1 st attempt is confirmed at the Award Assessment Board, and students are permitted to undertake further assessment. If students are referred on a 2 nd occasion, this leads to withdrawal from the Programme

Process Following summative assessment in the final placement of year two and year three, the student submits the OAR on the specified hand in date. Through calculating the score the Personal Tutor allocates a grade (%) for the student’s practice placement

Queries If you have further queries, please contact either the PDT Lead or the student’s personal tutor; details for the personal tutor should be provided on the OAR
