Johann Gutenberg And the Printing press!!

Johannes Gutenberg: German who created the printing press A German who had the idea to create the printing press. However, he never becomes financially rich from his idea Vocabulary

The Printing Press: A machine designed to produce mass copies of printed material With the invention of the printing press, people no longer had to write things by hand. Instead, they could mass produce the same copy of something Vocabulary

Gutenberg and the Printing Press Johann Gutenberg invents the printing press in Germany in 1440. This allowed society not had the ability to print mass copies of almost anything People were now able to spread ideas quickly, since people no longer had to copy texts by hand Notes

Inquisition Even thought the idea of Protestantism was spreading quickly throughout Europe, the Catholic Church was not pleased Even though the Catholic Church made an effort to reform (think of the Council of Trent), it wasn’t enough. Protestantism continued to spread

In an effort to combat Protestantism, the Catholic Church creates the Inquisition The purpose of the Inquisition was to find heretics, and convert them back to Catholicism

The Inquisitors used horrible torture methods to try and get people to confess to being heretics

The most famous inquisitions were in Spain in 1492 against Muslims and Jews, and in England under Queen Mary I (also known as Bloody Mary) in 1555

The Defendant: Martin Luther Charges: Heresy (belief or opinion that goes against traditional religious doctrine) Count 1- Development and preaching of heretical doctrines Count 2- Encouraging members of the Catholic Church to rebel against the authority and established teachings of the Church Count 3- Willful denial of the authority of the Pope and the Catholic Church

What will everyone do???

Martin Luther will… Testify in his defense before the court Answer Defense and Prosecution cross-examinations like Martin Luther (consistent with ML’s views on religion and his reasoning behind his actions) Write a 4-5 paragraph deposition stating his understanding of the charges, his plea, his reasons for pleading “not guilty” to the charges, and his religious position/issues with the Catholic Church.

The Prosecution Team will… Prepare its case to prove that Martin Luther is guilty under each count of the indictment charge. Each attorney will prepare a 4 minute speech (2 min introducing the case and 2 min summarizing the case against Luther) Ask 4 primary questions and 4 follow-up questions as part of its examination of Luther Ask 3 primary questions and 3 follow-up to each witness Write a 4-5 paragraph brief outlining their case and their plan to prosecute Martin Luther (include opening argument, witness descriptions, and closing statements)

The Defense Team will… Prepare a case to prove that Martin Luther is innocent under each count of the indictment charge. Each attorney will prepare a 4 minute speech (2 min introducing their defense and 2 min summarizing their defense of Luther) Ask 4 primary questions and 4 follow-up questions as part of its examination of Luther Ask 3 primary questions and 3 follow-up to each witness Write a 4-5 paragraph brief outlining their case and their plan to defend Martin Luther (include opening argument, witness descriptions, and closing statements)

The Witnesses will… Be familiar with the issues that would have concerned their character (ex. Henry VIII’s reason for breaking from the Catholic Church, Sir Thomas More’s devotion to the church, etc.) Provide answers to both the defense and prosecution’s questions that are consistent with their character and accurate historical facts. Write a 4-5 paragraph affidavit about their religious stance and their reasons for supporting/condemning Martin Luther.

The Judges will… Preside over the trial Evaluate and rule on evidence and arguments (evaluate the historical evidence) Reach a verdict and impose sentence Write a 4-5 paragraph decision on their verdict. The written decision must include: The verdict, the reasons for this verdict, the sentence, and the reason for the sentence.

The Bailiff will… - Maintain order in the courtroom

The Grade   You will receive three grades for this project: One for the written part, one for group effort, and one for presentation (the actual trial).
