West African Societies

For thousands of years, life in West Africa is shaped by three climate zones- the desert, the savanna, the rain forest. Trade brings goods, ideas, and a major religion- Islam- to West Africa. European kingdoms are startled at the sophistication and power of West African kingdoms when they first encounter them. The central governments of these kingdoms oversee empires based upon trade and tribute.

What does the term monotheistic mean? What is a savannah? In what ways did interaction with the Portugese affect West Africa? Describe West African culture.
