1 st QALLL CONFERENCE on Quality Assurance in Lifelong Learning focussing on Vocational Education & Training and Adult Education Reflective Practices for Teachers and Trainers: the LdV Reflect project Elisa Cavicchiolo – Istituto Guglielmo Tagliacarne, Roma Bled, March 23rd/24 th 2011

1st QALLL Conference. VN NN. Bled March 24 th Reflect project has been aimed at establishing and piloting a widely articulated methodology for the improvement of capabilities of VET teachers concerning the implementation of reflective practices within their activities. Needs and goals of the Reflect Project This methodology is meant closely tied to the development processes of assessment and self- assessment of the formative action, and as a valorising activity of tacit and not formal feedbacks produced by the action.

1st QALLL Conference. VN NN. Bled March 24 th Methodology: Reflective Practice Reflective practices are those methodologies able to discover and valorise the implicit and unexpected outcomes of the teacher/trainer practice. Reflective practice is a mode that integrates or links thought and action with reflection. It involves thinking about and critically analyzing one's actions with the goal of improving one's professional practice.

1st QALLL Conference. VN NN. Bled March 24 th Methodology: The R-Process INDIVIDUAL LEVEL GROUP LEVEL 3 LEVELS OF REFLECTION AND ACTION ORGANISATIONAL LEVEL

1st QALLL Conference. VN NN. Bled March 24 th Tools DELIVERY What can you do yourself and what help do you need? from others? DESIGN In what ways do you need to be more empowered to make this dream a reality? Individual Self-Assessment DREAM What is your dream of a better work within the project? DISCOVERY Right now, what are the best things about your work within the project?

1st QALLL Conference. VN NN. Bled March 24 th Methodology and tools contribute to a professional culture in VET based on autonomy, creativity and self-empowerment : Key Results VET teachers/trainers reinforced in their capacity to use, share feedbacks to propose and manage positive changes. Overcome the risks of bureaucratisation of VET practitioners: methodology for the implementation of reflective practices in different training/learning contexts is a way of contributing to a new balance between efficiency and effectiveness.

1st QALLL Conference. VN NN. Bled March 24 th Lessons learnt Co-Building the “right space” for reflection and action  for the creation of an appreciative and ethic space of sharing Dialogue between the three levels (individual, group and organisation)  for the development of a reflection and action process Covering all the phases of R-Process  for the improvement and self-improvement of people Enhancement of the autonomy of the participants  for the sustainability of the process

1st QALLL Conference. Bled March 23rd/24 th Challenges and recommendations Establishing a new view of Quality in VET: the “Embedded Quality” of VET practitioners. Diffusing reflective practices as a new frontier for professional development, linking effectiveness, self-development and ethics. Need and challenge to develop new types of indicators to monitor important aspects that are not traditionally assessed: participation, empowerment, appreciation, the development of self-awareness, self-reflection and an ethical disposition.
