HYMN 2nd annual meeting FTIR Introduction/Overview A.K. Petersen, J. Notholt, T. Warneke Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere

Deliverables 2nd year D4.2 For all FTIR stations: preliminary historical time series of total column abundances and vertical profiles for CH4 and N2O (for model evaluation and satellite validation) (planned month 12, partners 6-11, delivered month 13) D4.3 Assessment report of associated retrieval error budget (month 20, coordinated by partner 6, delivered month 20/24) D4.4. Report on optimized retrieval strategy (month 20, coordinated by partner 10, delivered month 24) D4.5 For all FTIR stations: revised historical time series of total column abundances and vertical profiles for CH4 and N2O (for model evaluation and satellite validation) (month 24, partners 6-11, delivered month 26?) D4.6. Preliminary results on the validation of the satellite data with FTIR observations from all sites. At all sites solar absorption measurements extent back several years, hence the validation can be done for the lifetime of SCIAMACHY, IMG and first years of IASI. (month 24, coordinated by partner 7, delivered month 24) Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere

Retrieval error budget Error sources taken into account: 1: Zero baseline offset in spectrum and channelling in background continuum 2: ILS: linear modulation loss and constant phase error 3: Line of sight 4: Solar lines: error in intensity and position 5. Temperature 6: Spectroscopic errors: intensity and pressure broadening 7: Noise in measurement Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere Statistical error budget for IzanaSystematic error budget for Izana by Frank Hase

Retrieval error budget: - new HDF files contain a complete error budget (random and systematic) - Report on retrieval error budget by F.Hase (D4.3) Associated retrieval error budget Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere

Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere Pressure-temperature Profiles Tests on retrieval using NCEP or ECMWF pressure- temperature profiles Advantage of ECMWF: - Same meteorology than modeller- and satellite-groups Disadvantage ECMWF: - ECMWF-profiles only up to 65km, the profiles has to be „extended“ - Corinne found an effect on the vmr/total columns of several percent for La Reunion - Apart from an „offset“/bias no significant effect for Paramaribo - NCEP used by TCCON  Decided at the Pasadena meeting to use NCEP

Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere Spectroscopy/Linelist I Modified HITRAN04 spectroscopy from the long-path cell measurements (performed by Uni Karlsruhe and Uni Bremen) Experimental spectra have then been fitted by two different ways by C. Frankenberg (CF) and F. Hase (FH). The obtained parameters were used as updates to the original HIT-04 database.

Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere Spectroscopy/Linelist II Uni Liège tested the modified spectroscopy data sets: No significant difference on information content has been observed when characterizing our CH4 retrievals successively performed with the HIT- 04, the CF and the FH linelists. Comparisons of retrieved CH4 total columns using the HITRAN 2004 database with respect to the two other datasets don’t shown important differences, even if these ones are significant and greater than the total error affecting our retrieved methane total columns. The CF and FH methane parameters significantly improve fitting quality without introducing a large bias on CH4 retrieved total and partial column.

Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere Spectroscopy/Linelist III by Pierre Duchatelet

Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere Harmonized retrieval strategy R.Sussmann organized harmonization of retrieval strategy and provided: - consistent set of altitude grids for each site - consistent set of regularisation matrices (Tikhonov harmonization) - one common a priori profile adapted to the mean tropopause altitudes of different sites (mid-latitude baloon profile by Toon, adapted for each site to its mean tropopause altitude)  Final decision during this meeting!

Optimized retrieval strategy Microwindows: same MW as in UFTIR (for both CH 4 and N 2 O) NCEP pressure-temperature-profiles Spectroscopy/Linelist: for CH 4 : Hitran2004 with adjustments (by Frank Hase/Linefit, from HYMN- lab-measurements) for N 2 O: Hitran2004 One common a priori profiles (adapted to NCEP mean tropopause altitudes for different sites) One consistent set of regularisation matrices and altitude grids (to be decided)  Details in D4.4 (Report on optimised retrieval strategy) HDF-Format (  new meta data file) Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere

Revised historical time series D4.5 For all FTIR stations: revised historical time series of total column abundances and vertical profiles for CH4 and N2O (for model evaluation and satellite validation) (month 24, partners 6-11)  Decide on optimized retrieval strategy  Deliver data sets by end of October Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere

Validation satellite/FTIR data D4.6. Preliminary results on the validation of the satellite data with FTIR observations from all sites. At all sites solar absorption measurements extent back several years, hence the validation can be done for the lifetime of SCIAMACHY, IMG and first years of IASI. (month 24, coordinated by partner 7) Hydrogen, Methane and Nitrous oxide: Trend variability, budgets and interactions with the biosphere
