Fiction Poetry Informational Traditional Tales Fantasy

Historical Fiction Made up stories that take place in a particular time period It may contain some actual historical facts. Details about vehicles, clothing, or food preparation must fit the time period. The Witch of Blackbird Pond Realistic Fiction Consists of stories that take place in modern times. The characters are involved in events that could happen. The characters are often involved in activities that hold our interest. Ramona and Her Mother

Poetry is written in verse written to evoke thought or feeling from the reader. It often uses rhythm and rhyme. Hyperboles, imagery, similes, metaphors, and personification are used often. Poems are written in stanzas. Examples are lyric, ballad, haiku, limerick, diamante, & cinquain.

Reference books give you quick information and facts on topics of choice. Examples are dictionaries, atlases, almanacs, encyclopedias, and thesauruses.

Atlas: A book of graphs, maps, and tables that gives geographic, physical, and population information about places in the world. Dictionary: a book of selected words arranged in ABC order with explanations of their meanings, pronunciations, part of speech, and other info. Almanac: a collection of facts such as records and awards that is published yearly. It also contains changes from each year such as Presidents, rainfall, population etc. Encyclopedia: a series of books arranged alphabetically giving information on all branches of knowledge. Thesaurus: A book containing a collection of synonyms and related words.

Biographies: They consist of factual stories about real people from the past and present. Bio= life graph= write An autobiography would be a story written about one’s own life by yourself.

 Non-fictions books give you information on facts about topics of choice.  They can be found under the subtopics of natural and physical science, social sciences, history, and art.  Examples could be books about the states, dinosaurs, Indians, holiday customs, modern art.

Folktale: is a story passed down by ‘word of mouth.” Many times it has the “Once upon a time” beginning. They usually tell a lesson. Tall Tale: Remember the 3’s H’s and the E: Humor, Hero, Hardship, and Exaggeration. Ex: Paul Bunyon or Pecos Bill. Myth: Usually contains gods and give explanations behind natural phenomenon.

Legends: A traditional story or collection of related stories popularly regarded as true but actually containing a mixture of fact and fiction. Many times it will contain historical figures with fictional traits and situations. Ex: King Arthur and Robin Hood Fable: A brief story, usually with animal characters, that states a moral or theme. Ex: The Boy Who Cried Wolf

Fantasy stories contain animals that talk, mythical creatures, and usually magic. Two examples are Science Fiction and High Fantasy.

High Fantasy Realistic characters often portrayed as heroes. Basic theme is good verses evil. Science Fiction Stress scientific laws and inventions A conflict always exists in the story that is added by the inventions Often takes place in the future.

Think of a story that you have read that would fit each purpose To entertain – to bring the reader enjoyment or amusement. To inform: to explain or give information. To give directions – to tell how to do something. To persuade – to convince readers to do or believe something To express – to share personal feelings. To teach a lesson – to use a story to share a valuable lesson.
