Renewable Energy - Geothermal

Signing of the Drilling Contract

Site Preparation

What are we trying to achieve? Reduce the dependence on fossil fuel Change the energy in the earth we have in abundance in the form of heat/hot water to the form of electricity that we can readily use. The Geothermal Development project seeks to bring the hot water to the surface where it can then be used in a steam turbine engine to generate electricity.

Arrival of the Rig

Commencement of the Drilling Phase

Where are we? Success

Production Well 2

What have we been able to achieve? We have two production wells Each well able to produce more than 2 Mega Watts of energy Current peak demand on the island is 1.5 Mega Watts.

What’s Next? Installing the necessary infrastructure Legal Framework Supply of Geothermal Energy

How would Geothermal Energy benefit Montserrat? significantly reduce the importation of fossil fuel to the island retaining valuable foreign exchange. Reduction of the cost of generating electricity The cost of goods and services that depend on the use of electricity either for its making or its storage or delivery would also be reduced. Reduction of the cost of living. Encourage the development of existing and new businesses that are heavily dependent on energy. Creates new jobs and expands the amount of goods and services available on island.
