Water Resources for Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. Jose Guerena November 21, 2002

Objective  The principal objective of this project is to use the GIS program to analyze the collected data on the state of Sonora and the city of Hermosillo, and be able to reach some conclusions from it.

Location  The city of Hermosillo is located in the northwest part of Mexico, in the middle west part of Sonora.  The exact location of Hermosillo is: 110º57’00’’ W, 29º05’00’’ N. 110º57’00’’ W, 29º05’00’’ N.

Why?  Hermosillo is located in a desert, with high temperatures and low precipitation; the main economical activity is agriculture, wish consumes most of the available water in the region; and there have not been a lot of rain in the last 7-8 years. These are the principal reasons why people are very concerned about the water resources in Hermosillo.

DATA Political Maps Mexico, states, cities, United States. Geographic coordinates. 30 m DEM

DATA Rivers and water bodies of Mexico Precipitation data General data of Hermosillo PopulationAreaTemperatureAltitude

DATA Monitoring Points: Latitude, Longitude Qmax, Qmin, Qmed. Per month in rivers. Volume, Qin, Qout. Per month in Dams. Q per month in water treatment plants. Precipitation (date, mm) Note: The years from wish the data was collected varies on each monitoring point. Goes from the 1937 to 1995.

What I am trying to find out: Watershed of Sonora, particulary the one of the Rio Sonora and San Miguel. Maximum, minimum and mean total precipitation in the watershed per year. Length and drainage area of the Rio Sonora.

What I am trying to find out: Qmax, Qmin, Qmed for the Rio Sonora. Return periods for rains and droughts, and also the duration of the last ones. A mass balance on the dam.
