STUDY GUIDE FOR CHM 241

CHM 241: PRINCIPLES OF ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY Credit Points : 2 Year: 2010/2011 Semester: Harmattan About the Course: A course of lectures covering theoretical principles of analytical chemistry.

LECTURERS INFORMATION Name Address Phone Number Prof. O.O.P. Faboya Dr. F.E. Adelowo Dr. O.S. Amuda Dr. O.O.E. Onawumi Mr. A.A. Giwa Consultation : Via , blackberry, audio, video, blogging,

INTRODUCTION The course will cover aspects of The quantitative and statistical treatment of experimental data, theory of sampling, gravimetric methods, chemical methods of analysis; Principles and applications of instrumentation to chemical analysis; topics covered include electrochemistry, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and chromatography. Three class hours. Four laboratory hours.  Ref: The College of William & Mary Williamsburg, VA.

Aim of the Course To develop students generic skill in the area of Analytical Chemistry. To develop their ability in analysing, estimating and minimising errors encountered in analytical data To be able to understand simple laboratory techniques

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Objectives: The primary objective of this course is to develop the tools and knowledge necessary to decide exactly what instrumental techniques will give you the most accurate and useful qualitative and/or quantitative information for a particular analytical problem. A quick scan of the topics on the remaining pages of the syllabus should quickly make you aware of the wide variety of instrumental methods available to scientists, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Requirements are to become familiar with the basics of each technique.

Course Materials Fundamental Analytical Chemistry Skoog and West Tips!!! Studying the reference materials and practising the questions at the end of each chapter will enhance your performance in the final examinations.

SYMBOLS AND ACCRONYMS k (lower case) - Rate Constant K (upper case)- Equilibrium Constant E cell - Electromotive force of a cell ΔG-Free Energy Change ΔH-Enthalpy Change ΔS-Entropy Change α-Degree of Ionization

Preparing for Examination Past exam papers Contacts with your course instructors Your own notes Advice from students who took the exam the previous years Tutorial conversation between the learners. NB: Books, such as Analytical Chemistry by Skooge, Holler and West, will not be required to pass examination in this course, however, if you choose to read them, it will provide excellent additional information concerning the course.

PRE - REQUISITES CHM 101

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS Practice questions at the end of each chapter of the reference book will be helpful in preparing for exams. Past examination questions and tutorial questions will also be useful.

ASSESSMENT Continuous assessment which includes Quiz, Assignment, Mid-Semester Test and Attendance will constitute 30% of overall assessment. Examination will be 70%.

Code of Conduct EXAM MALPRACTICES AND PLAGIARISM WILL ATTRACT PENALTY SUCH AS FAILURE IN THE COURSE OR REFERRAL TO ODL DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE.
