WORKING & PARENTING: THE GOOD: Resources –Money, opportunities, personal & family growth Role-modelling –Work ethic, experiential learning about job issues Distance –Perspective, resilience

THE BAD: Time –Scheduling, balance Focus –Attention to kids, work, self Stress –Trying to be everything to everyone –More chances for the unexpected to happen And the hardest part of all…

TRANSITIONING! Home to work… Home interruptions at work… Work to home… Work interruptions at home… What do you notice is the hardest part?

PLACE TRANSITION 1.Be where you are. 2.Note what needs to be postponed. 3. Take a small amount of time to shift gears. 4. Enter with outward focus. What in the world does this mean?

HOME → WORK 1.Don’t start your workday while you’re still parenting. 2. Keep a to do list, recruit your kids to help. 3.Build in transition time. 4.Enter work with immediate and day-long goals in mind.

WORK → HOME 1.Don’t start parenting while you’re still in work mode. 2. Keep an easy access to do list for work. 3.Build in transition time. 4.Enter home with people foremost in your mind, not timeline.

INTERRUPTIONS 1. Mark where you were. 2. Size the problem for yourself. 3. Frame your interaction with empathy. 4. Focus for a limited time. 5. Develop a plan. 6. End with positive statement.

HOME INTERRUPTS WORK 1. Ask your caller to hold for a few seconds. 2. Listen to the issue and rate it in your mind. Take notes. 3. Explain what you can do right then, for how long. 4. Truly focus for that amount of time. 5. Develop a plan with your caller. Make notes! 6. End with love and support.

WORK INTERRUPTS HOME 1. Ask your caller to hold for a few seconds. 2. Listen to the issue and rate it in your mind. Take notes. 3. Explain what you can do right then, for how long. 4. Truly focus for that amount of time. 5. Develop a plan with your caller. Make notes! 6. End with a positive statement.
