 Myopia is the medical term for nearsightedness.  Nearsightedness means that you have trouble seeing things in the distance. They appear blurred and unfocused.  It is a very common condition.

 Nearsightedness happens when the eye is too long or the cornea of the eye is overly curved. This causes the light to hit before it gets to your retina. The result? Things in the distance are unfocused and blurry.  There is also more and more evidence that some cases of myopia could be stress-related.

 Nearsightedness can hinder your ability to do things such as watch movies in theaters, see chalkboards/whiteboards, and (for adults) driving.

 I’ve already mentioned the symptoms of nearsightedness multiple times, but here’s a refresher.  Unfocused and blurred distance vision is the symptom.

 It is very easy to treat myopia.  Glasses and contact lenses are probably the easiest and most common treatment options.  Laser and refractive surgeries are available as well.  Vision therapy is offered to people with stress-related myopia.  One of the newest forms of treatment is orthokeratology. In this you wear a special type of rigid contacts at night that gently alter your cornea, so you don’t have to wear contact lenses during the day.

 Myopia affects nearly 30% of the US population.
