Indoor Localisation Sensor for Elderly People Student: Damien Reilly Supervisor: Dr. John Breslin

Overview of Presentation O Background O Overview of System O Hardware Components O Software O Progress to date O Timeline of Project O Tasks to complete O Questions

Background O One of the most important things for an elderly person is to have their Independence. O However, with Independence comes the risk of elderly people falling over while on their own without anyone there, etc. O To monitor the movement of an elderly person we need to devise a discrete, unobtrusive system.

Background O This system needs to track when the person: sits, walks, is sleeping, goes to the bathroom, etc. O With this we can obtain valuable information to diagnose early signs of several diseases e.g. heart failure, kidney problems, metabolic imbalances, etc. O Sensor will combine: O Indoor localisation to track locations. O Accelerometer to detect activities.

Overview of System O Average house plans: top level idea

Hardware Components

Software O Arduino Development Environment O Processing IDE O Eagle PCB

Progress to date O Initial research on products and components that could be used in the project. O Wiring of hardware components and connection of components to suitable power supply. O Uploading of initial program to the Arduino. O Gathering of readings from compass and storing the readings in data logger.

Timeline of Project

Tasks to complete O January: Design of PCB layout to suit components. O February: Improving coding of compass to get accelerometer data; Develop an algorithm to track the data from the data logger in a 2-D style using matlab O March/April: Monitor the energy efficiency of the system and try to minimise battery consumption; Development of GUI of tracked data; Testing and assembly of final prototype; Final thesis and report.
