Sequencing (chap. 17) Robert F. Mager Heather Buttorff

Key Questions F What is the best order of the lessons? F In other words, what sequence is most beneficial from the students point of view?

Sequencing For our purposes, sequencing has to do with the order of lesson delivery to reach the final instructional goal(s).

Keep in Mind F Sometimes skills are independent of one another. In this case, you can give students some control to choose the order that they learn these skills. F Other times, skills have prerequisite skills or knowledge.

F Keep student interest and motivation high while making sure they accomplish course objectives.

How? n Begin the course with high interest topics. – Give them an overview of the interesting parts of the course. This may help students maintain their motivation through the less interesting parts of the course. n Go from the big picture to the details. – Help students understand how the lessons fit into the larger scheme of things.

How? n If you can, give them choice, (and if you do you can give them a course map).

Creating A Course Map n Consult your skill hierarchy and put names of modules on cards or sticky notes. n On a flip chart size paper, depict the relationships of your skill hierarchy. n If 2-3 skills are closely related you can collapse them into one module.

Course Map n Think of the flow of the course. – Present it so students can understand the order of the lessons, and know when they have a choice. n Use your experience as well as your hierarchy to tell you the appropriate order. n Draw the map. n Get a second opinion.
