5.1 Energy & Photosynthesis Chapter 9. Energy:  All organisms require energy for survival  All energy in food ultimately comes from the sun.
Adenine ribose three phosphates What molecule is this?
Cell Energy. Energy from the sun Plants use the sun’s energy to make sugar. The sugar is called “glucose”. Glucose is stored in the plant and used by.
ATP. ATP & ADP  ATP: Adenine triphosphate  adenine + ribose + 3 phosphates  Energy storing molecule, only stores energy for a few minutes  Source.

4.2 Overview of Photosynthesis KEY CONCEPT The overall process of photosynthesis produces sugars that store chemical energy.
What Is ATP? Adenosine Triphosphate Molecule containing high-energy Phosphate bonds.
Photosynthesis. Pigments of Photosynthesis Pigments are molecules that absorb specific wavelengths (energies) of light and reflect all others. Chlorophyll.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS. Energy Stored in chemical bonds of compounds. Compounds that store energy: ATP, and NADPH. When bonds are broken, energy is released.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS. ENERGY AND LIFE Autotrophs  Use sunlight to create food molecules which are broken down for cellular energy.  PLANTS Heterotrophs 
The ability to create energy from the sun and Carbon Dioxide.
Photosynthesis. Energy and Life Living things need energy to survive. This energy comes from food. The energy in most food comes from the sun.
Chapter 8 Photosynthesis *You need to write only what is in white.
Class Notes 1: ATP Adenosine triphosphate. All living things need energy to live. Many cellular processes need energy (muscle use during exercise, cell.
ATP: The Energy Molecule. What is ATP? ATP stands for “adenosine triphosphate”. This molecule is known as the “energy currency” for organisms.

ATP and Photosynthesis Whiteboard Review Chapter 8 Material

1. What are the 3 components that make up an ATP molecule? Adenine, Ribose (sugar), and Phosphate groups

2. What is different between ADP and ATP? Which molecule holds energy? ADP has 2 phosphate groups, ATP has 3. ATP holds energy.

3. In what organelle is ATP created in both plants and animals alike? Mitochondria.

4. Explain how energy is released by ATP. What happens to release energy and change back into ADP? The last (3) phosphate group bond is broken and releases energy. From 3 phosphates groups to 2 phosphate groups.

5. What is the overall reaction (formula) for photosynthesis? Light + 6 CO2 + 6 H2O  6 O2 + Sugar/Carb (C6H12O6)

6. Where does the energy for photosynthesis come from? The sun.

7. What plant pigments are involved in photosynthesis? Chlorophyll (a and b)

8. In what organelle of a plant cell does photosynthesis take place? Chloroplast

9. What is a photosynthesis waste product? Oxygen gas (O2).

10. Does photosynthesis require a different type of energy than sunlight to occur? What other type of energy is needed? Yes. ATP is needed for the Calvin cycle (light-independent reaction) to occur.

11. What organisms undergo photosynthesis? Autotrophs.
