Probability of Compound Events Section 2-7

Notes There are two type of events: Independent is when the probability of the first event doesn’t affect the probability of the second event (With Replacement) Dependent is when the probability of the first event does affect the second event. (Without Replacement)

Example of an Independent Probability of pulling a heart, put your card back in the deck and trying for a diamond. Probability of reaching in a bag of Starburst and getting a Cherry flavored, putting the Starburst back in a pulling out another Cherry Starburst.

Example of a Dependent The probability of pulling out a heart from a deck of cards and then pulling out a diamond without replacing your first card. The probability of pulling out a Cherry Starburst and then pulling out a Yellow Starburst without putting the Cherry back in the bag.

Notes Replacement vs. Without Replacement Replacement insures the probability is the same Without Replacement varies the probability of the second event because there is one less after each event.

With Replacement Example: What is the probability of pulling out a heart, then a replace the card and then pulling a diamond P(Heart and Diamond)=

Without Replacement Example: What is the probability of pulling out two cherry Starburst from a bag with 20 left: 4 Cherry, 10 Yellow, 2 Orange, 4 Pink? P(Cherry and Cherry) =
