Rube Goldberg Device: The Fresh Maker Created by: Will Bunge, Jacob Fields, David Kernell, and Brandon Sneed

Overview The Fresh Maker is a device that is intended to do a series of events and intern release Mentos into a bottle of Diet Coke causing a pretty cool chemical reaction. It uses three or more energy changes. It changes from Potential to Kinetic, Potential to Kinetic, and then to Chemical.

Materials PVC Pipe Duct Tape Matchbox Car Rubber Bands Wood 2/3 of a Brick Sewing Thread Very Thin Rope Mentos Diet Coke Pan Razor Blade

Different Transfers 1.) A car with a razor blade attached to the top of it is pushed down a pvc pipe. 2.) When the car gets to the end of the pipe it cuts a string. 3.) The string is attached to a brick and when the string is cut the brick starts to fall. 4.) There is another string attached to the brick and when the brick falls it pulls the other string. 5.) When the string is pulled it releases a hatch and when the hatch is released it drops 3-4 Mentos into a container of Diet Coke. 6.) The Diet Coke then reacts to the Mentos causing a pretty cool reaction.

Assumptions Neglect friction. Neglect air resistance. All measurements are to three significant figures.

Calculations Initial Height of PVC Stand = 0.273m Distance from Impact to Release Point = 0.864m PVC Pipe Length = sqrt(0.273m m 2 ) –PVC Pipe Length = 0.906m Theta = tan -1 (0.273m / 0.864m) –Theta = degrees

Calculations Mass of Car = 0.038kg Height of Release = 0.273m Distance Traveled = 0.906m Velocity of Car: –PE 1 + KE 1 = PE 2 + KE 2 –Mgh + 0 = 0 + (0.5) (v f ) 2 –(0.038kg)(9.81m/s 2 )(0.273m) = (0.5)(0.038kg)(v f 2 ) –v f = 2.31m/s

Calculations Acceleration of Car: –Sin (theta) * (a t ) = a x –Sin (17.54 degrees) * (9.81m/s 2 ) = a x –a x = 2.94m/s 2

Calculations Tension in string just before being cut: –Down is positive –Mass of Brick = 0.640kg –T + F = 0 –-T = F –-T = ma –-T = (0.640kg)(9.81m/s 2 ) –T = N

Conclusion All in all this was a pretty cool project. It teaches you how to work with other people and to listen to their ideas and incorporate them with yours.
