Reconstruction Themes: Johnson’s political blunders and Southern white resistance led to the imposition of congressional military Reconstruction on the South. Reconstruction tried to address difficult issues of reform & racial justice in the South and did achieve some successes. The later abandonment of Reconstruction efforts meant those reforms were unfulfilled promises. Reconstruction also left behind a deep legacy of racial and sectional bitterness.
