Argumentative Writing Because everyone likes to be right!

Argumentative writing has one main purpose: To assert your opinion on a topic To do this you may be influencing or persuading your audience to do something.

The Argumentative Essay 1.The argumentative essay begins with a claim statement which asserts/states your purpose. Ex: Pollution is causing global warming, and people need to be smarter about energy usage in order to stop pollution’s harmful effects. Ex: School uniforms are necessary to improve a school’s atmosphere.

2.Uses logical reasons to support the claim. –Reasons come from your own personal beliefs 3. Uses credible facts from researching to support your reasons. –Credible facts include a. Research Studies b. Statistics  Ex: “According to a study done by the Environmental Protection Agency the ozone is depleting due to harmful emissions.”  Ex: “Studies have shown that in a Southern California school district, fights decreased 15% from 2009 to 2011 due to the institution of school uniforms.”

c.Emotional tactics 5. Ends with a closing statement that drives home your purpose.  Ex: Wouldn’t you rather be in school with safe environment rather than one with hostility and fear around every bend?

You may be firm in your belief; however, you will never persuade an audience if you don’t recognize their way of thinking…

Acknowledge the Opposing Viewpoint Gain common ground with your audience If they know you are acknowledging another viewpoint, you’ll gain credibility and respect.

Acknowledge the Opposing Viewpoint Gain credibility Your audience will know you did your research.

While books are less expensive to purchase than a tablet, once you put out the initial cost for the electronic device, most downloaded books are less expensive than a hardback book. Some are even available as a free download. For instance, the young adult novel, Fox Forever: The Jenna Fox Chronicles, by Mary E. Pearson is available as a digital download on Amazon for $9.99, but the print list price is $ CLAIM EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT CLAIM ACKNOWLEDGE OPPOSING VIEWPOINT REASON EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT CLAIM

Acknowledge the Opposing Viewpoint “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” Harper Lee, 1960 To Kill a Mockingbird

Claim Reasons Facts Addresses topic and opinion of article/essay. Opinions to support claim. Can be supported with factual evidence. Evidence that is proven true.
