Your Metabolism Problem of being overweight is related to two Concepts Metabolism –process by which your body gets energy from food Basal Metabolism – minimum amount of energy required to maintain the life processes in a body

Your Metabolism You get energy from your food, the energy value of food is measured in units of heat called Calories When exercise your metabolic rate increases and you burn more calories

Your weight If you take in fewer calories than you burn you lose weight If you take in more calories than you burn you gain weight 3,500 calories =1 pound Every extra 3,500 calories taken in equals and extra pound you carry

Improving Cardiorespiratory Endurance Aerobic Exercise – vigorous activity which oxygen is continuously taken in for a periods of a least 20 minutes Recommend 30 minutes 5 days a week Heart rate increases sending more oxygen to the muscles to be used as energy to do more work Distance runners

Improving Cardiorespiratory Endurance Anaerobic Exercise – Intense bursts of activity in which the muscles work so hard that they produce energy without using oxygen 100 meter dash
