Word Problems & Equations TWO AND MULTI-STEP EQUATIONS

#1 Carrie and Freddy collect stamps. Carrie notes that she has twelve less than 5 times the number of stamps Freddy has. Carrie has 23 stamps. How many stamps does Freddy have? 5s – 12 = 23 s = 7 stamps

#2 Mary buys 3 new fish for her aquarium for a total of $9.69. Two of the fish are guppies, and the other is a white cloud. The white cloud costs $3.19. What is the cost of each guppy? 2c + $3.19 = $9.69 c = $3.25

#3 Four friends equally split the cost of a pizza. George pays for his share of the pizza plus a drink that costs $1.29. He pays a total of $4.78. What is the cost in dollars of the entire pizza?

#4 Rick paid $24 to rent a kayak. Adam paid $20 to rent a kayak. How much longer did Rick rent a kayak than Adam did? Be sure to show the equation for each. Rick: 8h + 8 = 24; h = 2 hours Adam: 8h + 8 = 20; h = 1.5 hours 30 more minutes

#5 It costs $3 per person to visit a petting zoo, $1 per person to feed the animals, and $2 for parking. A family paid $14 to visit the zoo, feed the animals, and park their car. Write an equation and find out how many people are in the family. 3p + p + 2 = 14 p = 3 people

#6 Joel has twice as many CD’s as Marcie has. Subtracting 7 from the number of CD’s Joel has and dividing by 3 equals the number of CD’s Blake has. If Blake has 25 CD’s, how many CD’s does Marcie have?

#7 Tubes of oil paint are on sale for $.50 off. Cody bought 6 tubes of paint on sale and paid a total of $ What is the regular price in dollars of each tube of oil paint? 6(p -.50) = $25.80 p = $4.80

#8 A 16ft. board is to be cut into three pieces. Two of the pieces must be 4 feet shorter than the third piece. How long should each piece be? x + x – 4 + x – 4 = 16 x = 8; so 8ft, 4ft, 4ft

#9 A store owner sells two pairs of running shoes for each pair of high tops. He plans to order 144 pairs of shoes. How many pairs should be high tops? h + 2h = 144 h = 48 high tops

#11 Solve: 9(c – 2) = 45 c = 7

#12 Solve: 8u - u = -21 u = -3

#13 Solve: 2(5w + 4) + 2w = -76 w = -7

#14 Solve: 22 = 4(s – 8) – 2s 27 = s

#15 Solve: 24 = x – 6x = x

#17 Solve: 12 – 4(d – 3)= 20 d = 1

#18 x = -16
