CERAMIC SHOE

What You’re Doing: Building a life-like, freestanding clay shoe sculpture Skills: Observational rendering skills Texture creation General “clay control”

Techniques Involved: Slab Coil Scoring Created and applied texture* Applied texture: using other materials to create textured impressions/surfaces on clay (example: sponges, crumpled paper, stamps, etc.)

“Normal” Shoe Examples…

“Specific” Shoe Examples…

“Stylized” Shoe Examples…

Concept This should be meaningful to YOU. This is meant to be an interesting, visually appealing way to communicate a specific idea. Self-expression—your own style, something you do (cleats, dance shoes, personalized design) Symbolic, or communicates a specific message (military boots, worn work shoes)

Requirements/What I’m Looking For: One shoe, 6-8 inches long (slightly smaller than life-size) Can be based on an actual shoe, or completely made up, as long as it is a shoe Clean construction Well put-together: closed seams, no unintentionally rough surfaces, etc. Glaze is evenly and cleanly applied Textural accuracy Is it SUPPOSED to be smooth? Rough? Wrinkled? Design Is there relief involved? Added designs? Sgraffito?

Steps: 1. Pick your sole *no flip flops or similar shoes, please* 2. Write explanation of concept in your sketchbook a. Why this shoe? b. What does it mean/symbolize? c. How does it communicate that idea? 3. Use a ruler to sketch shoe in your sketchbook, actual size 4. Add design plan to sketch (decorations, textures and their location, trickiest areas) 5. Figure out how many pieces you will need to build the shoe, and their shapes 6. Show Ms. Squires your plans. She may or may not check them off. 7. Start!
