Distance Education

What is distance learning? How does it originated? Why choose distance learning?

Distance education, distance learning, dlearning, or D-Learning is a mode of delivering education and instruction, often on an individual basis, to students who are not physically present in a traditional setting such as a classroom. What is Distance Learning

Distance learning provides "access to learning when the source of information and the learners are separated by time and distance, or both. What is Distance Learning?

Distance learning was developed in the mid-nineteenth century in Europe (Great Britain, France, Germany), and the United States, and spread swiftly. How does it Originated?

In 1840, an English educator, Sir Isaac Pitman, taught shorthand by mail.

In the United States during nineteenth century, there were several opportunities in adult education prior to the advent of university extension beyond campuses.

In 1873, Anna Ticknow established a society that presented educational opportunities to women of all classes to study at home (Nasseh).

Cornell University attempted to establish a Correspondence University based out of its campus in 1883.

Thomas J. Foster started home- study courses in mine safety in the 1880s, as well. These courses grew to become the International Correspondence School.

In 1915, following a call by academicians to research the effectiveness of correspondence education vs. traditional education, the National University Extension Association (NUEA) was formed (Nasseh)

Until 1910, the medium of mail was the dominant delivery system, but new technologies, such as the lantern slide and motion picture, emerged to provide additional, visually-based options for correspondence study (Nasseh).

The most promising new technology that emerged between 1910 and 1920 was instructional radio.

The field of correspondence education continued to struggle for acceptance into the early 1950's (Nasseh)

In 1958, a UWCU report stated that the correspondence unit: 1."Offers nearly 450 courses in nearly 150 areas of learning.

2. Teaches 12,000 active students annually. 3. Gives personal instruction on more than 80,000 written assignments

4. Cooperates with the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of State to teach Immigration Law & Visa Operation to foreign service officers

5. And contracts with the U.S. Armed Forces Institute to develop and teach 200 correspondence courses on the high school and university level (Gooch)."

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, cable and satellite television came into use.

Why choose Distance Learning? ADVANTAGES: 1. Distance learning courses set you free from space and time constraints.

2. More affordable. 3. Large education offer. 4. Support. 5. Distance learning courses promote lifelong learning.

DISADVANTAGES: 1. Time and frustration involved learning how to get on-line for novices. 2. Lag time between student input and feedback -Time lapse between need for learner support and resolution.

3. Occasional internet provider downtime. 4. Student must be more active and self-directed in learning environment - Depends on individual motivation and initiative.

5. Occasional feelings of isolation- Potentially less group support for learners leading to isolation and possible non-completion of program. 6. Instructional design for group activities and group interaction more demanding on the instructor.

7.Demands large effort and cost to develop appropriate materials. 8. Demands large effort to create and maintain the technological infrastructure.

9. Distance Education is not for everyone.- It is not for undisciplined learners nor inflexible instructors.

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! GOD BLESS!
