Math in YA Literature A Wrinkle in Time Day 3

Welcome!  Please hand in homework assignment 2  Before you do, jot down 1-2 words or phrases from your word web on the front board  I will walk around to check progress on your CM log

Activity  Discuss with your group about the class word web; select 2 words or phrases put up by group members to talk about with the class  Also, talk about the questions on the following slide; each group will share their answers for one of them

Questions 1. What are your impressions on pg. 54; what was happening to Meg? What is an “ellipse” as mentioned on this same page? 2. How could you describe “infinity” as it is mentioned on pg. 62? 3. Have you ever had “that look…when a problem is just about to come clear” (pg. 63) or had trouble explaining something in math class? 4. What does the comment “your calendar…which…isn’t very accurate” (pg. 80) 5. How could you define the following math words as used towards the end of the reading for last night: “variation”, “exactly”, “identical”?

In-Class Assignment 3  As a class, we will fill out the notes for today  At the end of the period, you must have the entirety of your notes sheet filled out in order for you to earn your 5 points for today!

The “Wrinkle” behind AWIT  “A straight line is not the shortest distance between 2 points” (pg. 75)  Let’s define…  Distance – the amount of space between two things  A “wrinkle” is when the 2 points at the ends of a line segment come together into 1

Let’s Talk about Dimensions  Look on pg to fill out blanks for the first 3 dimensions and then draw a sketch  Then, we will talk about examples  Dimension 1: the number line  Dimension 2: a square  Dimension 3: a cube

The Importance of “Time” in AWIT  Relationship between distance and time:  Speed = distance / time  Try the example with units on your own  Real world example: miles per hour (mph)  Let’s define…  Relationships – the way in which two or more concepts or objects are connected  These are important in math!  Pay attention to time as you keep reading the novel

Homework  Read pages (stop before chapter 10)  Complete homework assignment 3  Select one passage (2-3 pages) from tonight’s reading and fill out the sheet that I will pass out; write down page numbers!  Close/critical reading is carefully looking into a small portion of text for its literary elements  I suggest to pick a passage that involves math  Update CM log
