 HOMOPHOBIC AND TRANSPHOBIC COMMENTS  70% of all participating students, LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ, reported hearing expressions such as “that’s so gay” every day in school and almost half (48%) reported hearing remarks such as “faggot,” “lezbo,” and “dyke” every day in school.

 Remember, students should take the lead in starting a GSA  Supportive staff and administration are essential: › This will lead the students feeling empowered and encouraged...

 At times, students may not feel comfortable to start a GSA for any number of reasons, so: YOU CAN HELP!

 Talk with your staff about it in the staff room  Bring it up as an agenda item at a staff meeting  KEY: whomever is the staff sponsor is a clear choice of being an Ally against LGBTTIQ discrimination  Ask the staff if they know of kids who would be interested in helping out – e.g. – Student Council?

 The District’s Equity Department can assist you in bringing people.  Ask your fellow administrators for their actions plans when starting/supporting a GSA.

 The steps to staring a GSA are not unlike the steps taken when starting any other group of student leadership.  Be mindful of: › Special event days › Budget planning › Rooms allocated for meetings › Announcements

 It is important to find a place that is safe for the students to meet so they can feel rest-assured that they will not be targeted.  Ensure that the GSA is also known as a group open to Straight Allies

 The reality is that when you start to advertise, such information and posters may be vandalized.  If this does occur, address this concern with the student-body and consider placing the posters behind enclosed cases.

 Make sure the wording of the GSA advertizing is inclusive and inviting for all GSA members to join for the social equity and justice for LGBTTIQ population.  Attend the first couple meetings thanking your students and teacher(s) for attending and provide some snacks and words of encouragement.
