Promoting a Smoke-free Enviornment Ch. 20 Lesson 3

Environmental Tobacco Smoke ( ETS) (Vocab)  Secondhand smoke. Air that has been contaminated by tobacco smoke.  2 types of ETS:  Mainstream  Sidestream

Mainstream Smoke (Vocab)  Smoke that is exhaled from the lungs of a smoker.

Sidestream Smoke (Vocab)  Smoke that comes from the burning end of a cigar, cigarette or pipe. (Most Dangerous)

Smoking While Pregnant  Babies of mothers who smoke during pregnancy or who are exposed to ETS are more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).  Infants exposed to ETS after birth are twice as likely to die of SIDS

Parents That Smoke  Children of smokers tend to have higher incidence of sore throats, ear infections, and upper respiratory problems than children of non-smokers.  More likely to have weaker lungs than children of non-smokers.  Twice as likely to become smokers themselves.

Review  What is environmental tobacco smoke, and what types of smoke does it contain?  List 3 ways ETS affects children?
