Georeferencing Botanical Data Using Text Analysis Tools Clare A Llewellyn, Elspeth Haston & Claire Grover

An example of the problem faced: Over 43,000 specimen records in the institutional database from Britain and Ireland 881 (2%) contain a latitude value 10,537 (26%) contain a UK Ordinance Survey National Grid reference 58% with some text in the locality field Specimens collected over centuries – from 1747 to the present day

Aim of the Project: To create a tool that will allow plant specimen curators to interact with geographical locations that are automatically extracted from plant specimen records to correct or add to those records. Identify where text analysis tools can be used in botanical curation Implement the analysis tools in a prototype system Evaluate if this improves the ease, speed or accuracy of botanical curation
